Professor Donald Marinelli: Gen Z has various opportunities for career development in Esports

Based on the cooperation between Van Lang University and Carnegie Mellon University (USA) through the years, on September 13, 2023, VLU students had a chance to attend a special class with Professor Donald Marinelli, Co-Founder of the world-renowned Entertainment Technology Center (Carnegie Mellon University), Professor at Arizona State University and Columbia University. The topic of the public lecture was very interesting and “trending” among young people: "Introduction to Esports."

As technology increasingly integrates into people's daily lives, education, and entertainment, electronic sports (Esports) are gradually becoming a popular sport, attracting significant attention, particularly from the youth. According to Newzoo, the global Esports audience is expected to reach 640.8 million people by the end of 2025. Esports has the potential to become a multibillion-dollar industry in the future.

In Vietnam, the Esports competition model has gradually asserted its position through multiple international awards, contributing to the promotion of Esports development and dispelling the stereotypes of a portion of the audience regarding this unique sport.

During the lecture, Professor Donald Marinelli emphasized the remarkable growth rate of the Esports industry from 2019 to the present. In Vietnam, Esports is strongly developing, particularly among the youth community. Esports is not only a form of entertainment but also provides career opportunities in various fields. It also expands career opportunities in many fields: Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Information Technology, Software Engineering, et cetera. Successful promotion strategies, user growth, or technical advancements require a highly specialized and esports-savvy workforce to maintain and develop this platform.

Professor Donald Marinelli shared that Esports is a highly competitive and rapidly changing market, with legal frameworks that require further development. Therefore, students must have a certain amount of creativity, initiative, and independence to pursue this field."

Going beyond the traditional classroom model, Van Lang University has seriously invested in expert-led sessions as a way to foster creativity in students, help students stay up-to-date with changes in the job market and inspire them to become a knowledgeable, skilled, and confident generation of pioneers in their chosen professional fields.

In addition to his public lecture about Esports, Professor Donald Marinelli will continue to accompany the Van Lang community in the Technology in Education event on the morning of September 15, 2023. Professors and famous experts in technology and education fields will share their academic perspectives on the digital transformation process at Van Lang University.
