VLU Students’ Bioproducts from Shrimp Shells for Extended Fruit Preservation Wins Special Prize at the Ra Khoi Start-up Competition 2023
On June 24, 2023, Bioproducts from shrimp shells for extended fruit preservation by Van Lang University (HCMC) students won the special prize at the “Ra Khoi” Start-up Competition 2023.
The “Ra Khoi" start-up competition in 2023 was launched in March this year, attracting 55 ideas and projects from 205 participants.
All of the participants were students from many different universities in Ho Chi Minh City. The seven most outstanding teams had been selected for the final round.
The VLU Faculty of Business Administration in collaboration with the Saigon Hi-tech Park Incubation Center launched the competition.
Each team takes turns to present their ideas and products to the judges. This also serves as an opportunity for the teams to “receive capital” from potential investors.
Quoc Tin, a member of the Atoulle team (Van Lang University), mentioned that the team “found the gold” hidden in shrimp shells. They conducted research that turned shrimp shells into Chitosan - a type of Biomaterial.
The team’s products are distinguished from existing bioproducts that are mostly in powder form and require preparation before use. This time, the team has successfully developed a liquid product.
This innovation can help preserve fruits for a longer period, 2 to 5 times longer than conventional methods, while still maintaining the fruit’s flavor and ensuring the food safety standards.
The judges and investors highly appreciate the effectiveness of the product that Atoulle has brought to this startup competition.
The project’s original ideas and product hold the potential to address the issue of shrimp shell waste which Vietnam generates around 325,000 tons annually, as reported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The Atoulle team received a special prize worth 25 million VND.
The first prize was awarded to Build To Win (Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry) with the Smart Water Meter project. The product offers solutions to measuring water velocity, remote water cutoff, web-based control and monitoring of water parameters, thereby calculating water consumption and the corresponding payment amount
The second prize went to the Born to be Rich team (Van Lang University) with the Hcare helmet cleaning project (a chain of helmet cleaning service stores).

The Trang Nguyen Legend project (Van Lang University and Foreign Trade University - Ho Chi Minh City Campus 2) with an online learning platform using artificial intelligence - based methods was awarded the third prize.
The four outstanding projects will receive ongoing support and guidance for development from Van Lang University and Saigon Hi-tech Park Incubation Center (SHTP - IC).
