As part of the series of activities expanding the academic ecosystem of the Vietnam Association for Information Processing, the Student Artificial Intelligence Olympiad - OlpAI’25 is regarded as the first national-level "AI arena," aiming to discover and honor young talents in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Accordingly, the team from the Faculty of Information Technology at Van Lang University made their mark by winning a national Encouragement Prize.

Unlike traditional informatics competitions, OlpAI’25 posed a significant challenge for the competing teams, as each problem set was designed within a complete computing environment, including cloud infrastructure, GPUs, and specialized libraries. This approach contributed to enhancing the quality of the competition, aligning the awards closer to global standards.

The competition was organized following the success of the Vietnam Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence for high school students (VOAI) held in May 2025.

As one of the representative teams from the Southern region, the FITLAB team, consisting of Truong Viet Vu, Nguyen Chi Hai, and Nguyen Phuc Nguyen from Class 28, Faculty of Information Technology, Van Lang University, advanced to the Final Round, which lasted six hours. During the finals, the students faced in-depth challenges in data processing, AI modeling, and programming within a GPU-cloud environment.

Previously, the FITLAB team had won an Encouragement Prize in the Southern Regional category, securing their place in the National Finals

Their final round focused on two main tasks:

  • Task 1: Building an automated image captioning system by combining Computer Vision (CV) and Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Task 2: Consisting of two sub-tasks:

2.a. Developing a Computer Vision and Machine Learning model to recognize daily life activities from images.

2.b. Generating variants/new images for "adversarial attacks" to test the robustness of the developed model.

Being one of the 59 teams with 177 exceptional students advancing to the OlpAI’25 Finals, the team from the Faculty of Information Technology, Van Lang University,  earned the Overall Encouragement Prize. This is the result of a process of consolidating foundational knowledge, practicing teamwork, assigning roles based on each member's strengths, and developing competitive resilience under the dedicated guidance of Dr. Ngo Hoang Tu and Mr. Nguyen Thai Anh.
