On February 24, 2025, the Faculty of Medical Technology at Van Lang University organized the "70th Anniversary Gathering for Vietnamese Doctors' Day (February 27, 1955 – February 27, 2025)" alongside a seminar titled "Contributions to the Development of Hospital Internship Programs by Decree 111/2017/NĐ-CP."
The event welcomed representatives from Military Hospital 175, Hospital 30-4, Thong Nhat Hospital, the Rehabilitation and Occupational Disease Treatment Hospital, along with medical experts and faculty members from the Faculty of Medical Technology. Beyond serving as an occasion to honor the invaluable contributions of healthcare professionals, the gathering provided an opportunity to review student internship programs at hospitals. It also facilitated discussions among stakeholders to assess the current state of hospital internships, draw valuable insights, and contribute to the enhancement of medical education, fostering the sustainable development of the healthcare sector.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Toan - Deputy Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, emphasized the irreplaceable role of healthcare professionals in community health. He highlighted that doctors are not only dedicated "white-coated angels" committed to patient care but also passionate mentors guiding younger generations on their journey to becoming highly skilled and ethically responsible medical practitioners.
Mr. Tran Quoc Huy – Lecturer at the Faculty of Medical Technology and Assistant to the Faculty Board – presented a summary report on hospital internships. The report evaluated students' internship performance, identified key takeaways, and proposed solutions to enhance training quality.
During the gathering, Dr. Ho Ngoc Diep – Deputy Director of the Training Center at Military Hospital 175 – provided an overview of the hospital-school collaboration model in clinical training. He emphasized: "Hospital-based training allows students to engage with advanced medical techniques and handle complex cases, thereby refining their skills and gaining valuable hands-on experience."
During the seminar titled "Contributions to the Development of Hospital Internship Programs by Decree 111/2017/NĐ-CP." representatives from various hospitals provided evaluations of the hospital internship experiences of VLU Medical Technology students. They highlighted the students’ ability to quickly absorb knowledge and their strong teamwork skills. Additionally, the hospital partners expressed their willingness to continue collaborating with VLU to develop a hospital internship program that is scientifically structured, practice-oriented, and well-aligned with real-world demands.
The experts also identified certain challenges in mentoring interns and highlighted some limitations in the current curriculum. They emphasized the need to strengthen practical training, enhance students’ professional competencies, and cultivate ethical standards in the medical field. Several suggestions were made to improve the internship model, including a more balanced allocation of time between theoretical learning and hands-on practice and greater student involvement in patient care procedures.
In response to these insights, the Department of Academic Affairs and the Faculty of Medical Technology will conduct further research to refine the training framework with a stronger emphasis on applied learning. Future developments will focus on reinforcing foundational knowledge, expanding training capacity, and optimizing the internship structure. Additionally, a comprehensive evaluation system will be established to ensure that students meet industry-standard competency requirements upon graduation.
Guided by the core values of "Precision, Quality, and Dedication," the Faculty of Medical Technology is committed to continuously improving its curriculum. It regularly updates teaching materials with contributions from leading experts, ensuring a well-structured educational journey that integrates classroom theory, laboratory practice, and hospital-based internships.
