On March 10, 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry at Van Lang University organized a workshop on “Integrated Periodontal - Orthodontic Treatment”, with the participation of dental experts and practitioners.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Quang Phi, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, stated that with the current trend of integrating orthodontic and periodontal treatment, the Faculty of Dentistry at Van Lang University organized workshops and exchanges among experts in the field to provide valuable lessons and experiences.
Drawing from his experience in Singapore in January 2024, Dr. Tran Ngoc Quang Phi highlighted 8 key focal points, in the overview of integrated periodontal - orthodontic treatment, including: Orthodontic treatment in periodontitis phase IV; Orthodontic treatment in periodontitis phase C: Young patients; Optimizing orthodontic results: Digital tools for prevention; Periodontal complications and tooth positioning/3D implanting; Periodontal regeneration and orthodontics; Gingival mucosal surgery in orthodontically treated patients; Ortho-perio synergy to enhance smile aesthetics; Management of tooth loss and facial development; Management of cases around teeth/orthognathic surgery/complex implants. Dr. Tran Ngoc Quang Phi also highlighted the step-by-step approach to effective periodontal care, which is the application of "PRICE" (Prerequisite to therapy - Risk - Intervene - Check - Exit).
During the workshop, Dr. Tran Ngoc Quang Phi also presented the second report titled "Orthodontic Treatment for Patients with Periodontal Disease - When, How and Stability."
In the report titled "Application of the 2018 classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions in currently perio-ortho synergy treatment", MSc. Dr. Pham Hoai Nam, Head of the Department of Periodontology and Implantology at the Faculty of Dentistry, Van Lang University, emphasized the close relationship between orthodontics and periodontics through safe treatment and complication management. Additionally, the doctor shared the complexity levels of treating periodontitis through four different stages. According to MSc. Dr. Pham Hoai Nam, understanding the severity levels will help doctors determine the most appropriate treatment methods.
In discussing the challenges and limitations in adjusting orthodontic treatment for orthodontic patients, MSc. Dr. Huynh Thanh Tien, a lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry, Van Lang University, stated that orthodontic treatment for patients with periodontitis phase IV is feasible. According to the doctor, the condition of the periodontium will improve with a well-combined treatment of orthodontics and periodontitis. Typically, orthodontic treatment can commence after periodontal regeneration treatment for a period of 4 - 6 weeks. Dr. Huynh Thanh Tien also advised regular dental check-ups and scaling every 3 months to minimize periodontal diseases.
Overall, the second seminar on integrated orthodontic and periodontal treatment underscored the importance of the close relationship between orthodontics and periodontics, especially in addressing the rising demand for orthodontic care. Participants, including dental experts, practitioners, and students, gained valuable knowledge and experiences in various advanced treatment methods, enhancing both professional practice and the learning process in the field of Dentistry.
