(VLU, 16/3/2023) - On March 15, 2023, the Faculty of Arts and Design held a workshop with the theme "Drawing on porcelain", providing learners with instruction on how to transmit creative thoughts and messages utilizing relatively new painting methods in Vietnam. – a technique for painting on enameled porcelain. The workshop has the participation of a special guest - artist Hong Duc Thanh, pen name Hong Me Xuyen - a master of ceramic porcelain painting techniques.
Artist Hong Duc Thanh is an expert with extensive knowledge and experience in working and researching ceramics for 40 years; he has traveled widely and trained practitioners and artists all over the world. At the "Drawing on Porcelain" workshop, artist Hong Duc Thanh shared with Van Lang students about his motivation to follow his passion for painting, as well as his experiences and expertise in painting on porcelain. The masterpieces that have developed Hong Duc Thanh's reputation are also brought to the workshop for students to experience and admire.
Hong Duc Thanh's style of painting on enameled porcelain was influenced by the pen of the United States, Germany, and Norway, as well as the writing style of the Linh Nam genre. He does not need to sketch first; instead, he demonstrates his talent by controlling the strength and lightness of the brush head to produce clear pattern lines with sufficient density, hot and cool tones, and simply communicating both classic and modern. Because each of his works is unique, he is also known as an artist with a pen style "at the heart of life."
Artist Hong Duc Thanh shared at the workshop: "I am very happy to see Van Lang students who are talented, enthusiastic, dedicated, and determined to stick with this art despite their very young age. When I come to Van Lang University, this is a priceless gift and a powerful spiritual support for me."
In addition to the artist Hong Duc Thanh's sharing, the workshop provided extra opportunities for students to connect, exchange, and practice. Faculty of Arts and Design students carefully hand-painted and fired enameled porcelain pieces. Artist Hong Duc Thanh lauded the Faculty of Design students for their simple, unique, distinctive, and inventive decorative creations.
It is hoped that the exchange would provide students with beneficial experiences, new knowledge to complement their journey of establishing their own values and brands, and more motivation to trust in their chosen career path.
