To enhance legal knowledge and provide opportunities for students and postgraduate students at the Faculty of Law, Van Lang University, as well as scholars, students, postgraduates, and researchers from law training institutions across the country to access international law, from May 2024, the Faculty of Law will launch a series of legal seminars on Civil and Commercial Law. These seminars will feature speakers who are Professors and Doctors currently teaching at prestigious international universities.
The opening of the Civil and Commercial Law seminar series at the Faculty of Law, Van Lang University, featured Seminar No. 01 with the topic "Tort Law in the US" held on May 28, 2024. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Thuy, Head of the Faculty of Law at Van Lang University and Head of the Organizing Committee, shared at the opening ceremony: “Tort law is one of the five major areas of US civil law, alongside contract law, property law, inheritance law, and family law. The achievements in the field of tort law in the United States not only help US law meet the demands of a free and dynamic market economy but also serve as an inspiration for research and learning for many countries, including Vietnam.”
Within the framework of the first seminar, Professor Jeffrey E. Thomas, Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Graduate Programs and Professor of Law at the School of Law, University of Missouri-Kansas City (USA), introduced various approaches to tort liability in the Common Law system through a series of landmark cases in the United States. Following the speaker's presentation, students, postgraduate students, and guests actively participated in the discussion with Professor Jeffrey E. Thomas, thereby further clarifying the regulations on tort liability from a comparative perspective between Vietnamese and US law.
Also within the framework of the Civil and Commercial Law seminar series, on May 30, 2024, the Faculty of Law continued with Seminar No. 02 on the topic “Overlap in Protecting IP Rights - Impacts on Innovation and Competition”, presented by Dr. Le Vu Van Anh, Assistant Professor and Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at Durham University, United Kingdom. The discussion was lively, focusing on the challenges in developing an intellectual property law system that can lead to overlaps in protecting IP rights. Dr. Le Vu Van Anh also clarified this issue through the practice of famous disputes.
With their extensive research experience, teaching expertise, and deep understanding of their respective fields, Professor Jeffrey E. Thomas and Dr. Le Vu Van Anh have provided valuable international legal knowledge and insights, offering numerous reference solutions for Vietnamese law. Moreover, the organization of these seminar sessions has created a forum for open and practical international academic exchange and networking for students and postgraduate students at the Faculty of Law, Van Lang University, complementing their classroom learning and activities.
