President’s remarks at Commencement 2026: Higher Education provides a foundation of knowledge, capability, character, and inner strength
From August 6th to 10th, 2026, Van Lang University held 28th Commencement Ceremony, marking the milestone of maturity for more than 10,000 new Bachelors, Engineers, Architects, Doctors, Pharmacists, and over 230 new Master's degree holders across various fields. In the Commencement Remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu – President of Van Lang University – delivered a profound message to the new graduates: With the foundation provided by higher education - knowledge, capability, character, and inner strength - we can each ask, and gradually learn to answer, the question: What kind of life do I want to live?

Today, Van Lang University proudly holds the Commencement, Class of 2026 to confer degrees upon our new master’s graduates, engineers, bachelor’s graduates, doctors, pharmacists, and architects.
On behalf of the University leadership, I extend my warmest welcome and best wishes to our distinguished guests, faculty members, parents, and especially our Graduates.
Dear Graduates,
You began your university journey at a time when digital technology and artificial intelligence were entering a period of extraordinary development, transforming the ways in which people learn, work, connect, and create. These changes have brought tremendous opportunities, while at the same time placing ever greater demands on adaptability, interdisciplinary thinking, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Against this backdrop, alongside continuously updating our curricula and teaching methods to respond to emerging needs, Van Lang has continued to expand into fields related to technology and the creative industries. Among this year’s graduates are students from several new programs launched in 2022, including Communication Technology; Film and Television Technology; Information Systems; and Computer Networks and Data Communications. These programs are part of the University’s broader effort to respond to evolving societal needs and equip learners with the capabilities required in an increasingly dynamic professional environment.
During your years at Van Lang, you have witnessed and been part of a period of significant development of the University. Our ecosystem for education, research, and innovation is continually developing, giving students more opportunities to learn, conduct research, and gain professional experience. The Van Lang Center for Innovation and Impact was established in 2025 on the occasion of the University’s 30th anniversary; new buildings, laboratories, studios, and practice facilities have also been put into operation, creating greater opportunities for experiential, project-based, and professionally oriented learning.
Alongside these developments in infrastructure, Van Lang has strengthened the application of technology and data in teaching, learning, and university governance. You are among the first generations of students to study in an environment where digital transformation and the use of AI have become part of everyday teaching and learning. These efforts were recognized when Van Lang became the first and only university in Vietnam to be named a Microsoft Showcase School for the 2025–2026 academic year. The University was also honored with the “Educational Environment of the Year” award at the “2025 Smart Education Initiative Awards - SEI Awards”. These recognitions reflect our continuing efforts to build a modern, flexible, learner-centered environment in which technology is used to enhance educational quality and the student experience.
Over the past several years, you have also had more opportunities to study alongside international faculty and students, participate in exchange programs, and engage in multicultural academic environments. These experiences reflect Van Lang’s increasingly strong commitment to internationalization. Between 2022 and 2026, the University continued to expand its network of partnerships with research institutes, universities, associations, organizations, and businesses across many countries and territories. Through these partnerships, Van Lang has welcomed thousands of international students for academic exchange, interaction, and study, while enabling an increasing number of Van Lang students to participate in study and exchange programs abroad.
At the same time, Van Lang has consistently regarded quality as the foundation of sustainable development. In 2024, Van Lang University achieved FIBAA institutional accreditation and has continued to pursue accreditation for our academic programs. To date, 48 programs have been accredited according to national and international quality standards, including programs accredited by AUN-QA and FIBAA.
These continuous efforts to enhance quality have also strengthened Van Lang’s standing on the international higher education landscape. Van Lang University was ranked 251st in Asia in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, 1001-1200 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and 401-600 worldwide in the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026.
In subject rankings, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Van Lang was ranked 69th globally in Art & Design; 101-150 in Performing Arts and Hospitality & Leisure Management; 551-600 in Business & Management Studies; 551-700 in Economics & Econometrics; and 701-750 in Computer Science & Technology. These results recognize not only the University’s overall development, but also the progress we have made in education, research, and innovation across our diverse academic disciplines.
You have studied and grown during this very period of transformation. Through your own efforts and achievements, you too have contributed to Van Lang’s journey of development.

Dear Graduates,
Today, your teachers and your parents are here to celebrate the completion of a profoundly important chapter in your lives. Graduation is not simply the end of your years of study. It is also the beginning of a new journey, a journey in which you will choose your own path, take responsibility for your own decisions, and gradually shape the life that lies ahead.
On this special occasion, I would like us to pause for a moment and reflect on the society in which we live today, and from there consider a question that may appear very simple yet may remain with you throughout your lives.
Over the past few years, the world has undergone profound transformations. Extraordinary advances in new technologies have changed the ways we learn, work, and connect, while equally rapid changes have taken place across the global economy, society, and everyday life.
For you in particular, this has been an extraordinary period. You entered university as the world was emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. As you prepare to graduate, you are witnessing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and its unprecedented impact. Within only a few years, you have experienced transformations that, in earlier times, might have taken decades to unfold.
Perhaps the world has never moved at such speed.
And yet it is precisely in times of such profound change that human beings often return to the most fundamental questions about the meaning of life. The renowned historian Yuval Noah Harari has observed that, in the twenty-first century, our inner life has become more important than ever, because the speed of technological change is compelling us to confront once again the most fundamental questions about ourselves.
Perhaps the faster our external circumstances change, the more we need an inner compass to guide the choices we make.
And so, what I would like you to reflect on today is not which career you will choose, or how technology may reshape your lives. The question I would like to ask is: What kind of life do we want to live? What kind of life would each of us find meaningful and worth living?
For centuries, human beings have searched for answers to this question. Philosophers, thinkers, and cultures may express it differently, but they have all returned to the same concern: What makes a life good and meaningful?
Higher education itself is part of that lifelong search for an answer. Since the emergence of the modern university, many of the great thinkers in education have converged on a common belief: a university is not merely a place for transmitting knowledge or preparing someone for a profession. It is also a place where human beings develop more fully; where they continually seek truth, come to understand themselves, learn to understand others, and develop a sense of responsibility toward the community.
At its deepest level, a university is a place where we learn to ask questions, to think independently, and gradually to shape the character, inner strength, and values that will guide our lives.
Certainly, a university cannot give its students a ready-made formula for a happy or successful life. Nor can a university provide the answer to what gives each individual life its meaning. Perhaps the most valuable gift a university can offer is the ability to continue asking the right questions and the courage and wisdom to seek one’s own answers.
Each person has different circumstances, dreams, choices, and paths. But with the foundations that higher education provides - knowledge, capability, character, and inner strength - we can each ask, and gradually learn to answer, the question: What kind of life do I want to live?
I believe that throughout your years of study at Van Lang, you have gained not only professional knowledge and the skills required for your future careers. More importantly, you have had the opportunity to experience a learning environment that encourages freedom of thought, a commitment to lifelong learning, responsibility toward the community, and an aspiration to create positive value for society.
Perhaps not all of you have a complete answer today to the question of what kind of life you want to live. What matters is that you now have a foundation from which to continue searching for that answer - through knowledge, through your own experiences, through the decisions you make in your work and relationships, and through the ways in which you respond to the challenges life will bring.
If your years at Van Lang have helped you develop the habit of asking questions, thinking independently, listening to others, continuing to learn, and making responsible choices, then perhaps that is the most valuable preparation the University can give you. Because the enduring outcome of your education is not simply what you know today. It is your ability to keep learning, to keep reflecting, and to keep answering for yourselves the great questions of life long after this graduation day has passed.
Dear Graduates,
Today marks the beginning of a new journey, one filled with both excitement and challenge. From this day forward, you will become more independent and more autonomous. At the same time, you will also assume greater responsibility for the choices and decisions you make.
As you leave today’s graduation ceremony, I hope you will carry with you the question I have posed: What kind of life do we want to live? What kind of life would each of us find meaningful and worth living?
There is no single answer. Each person will have a different way of living, a different journey, and different choices to make. Yet when we think of the people we genuinely respect, and of the lives that leave something of value behind, I believe there are certain qualities that seem to appear time and again.
I would like us to consider these qualities through three smaller questions. I believe that the way each of us answers these three questions will help shape our answer to the greater question of our lives.
The first question: What kind of person do you want to become?
When you first entered Van Lang University, I asked you this question: What kind of person do you want to become? And today, as you graduate from Van Lang, I ask you exactly the same question. And throughout the life ahead of you, I hope you will continue asking yourselves: Who do I truly want to become?
Even before today, many of you have probably asked yourselves many times: Where will I work? What profession will I pursue? Which path will I follow? What do I hope to achieve? These are all natural and important questions. Career and achievement will always be meaningful parts of life.
But with time, I believe another question will become even more important: What kind of person do you want to become?
Many years from now, what others remember first about us may not be our titles or our achievements, but the kind of people we were, whether we were honest and kind; whether we kept our promises; whether we had the courage to take responsibility; and whether we lived faithfully according to the values in which we believed.
The philosopher Charles Taylor has argued that who we are depends on what we believe is important. The values we choose to uphold shape the decisions we make each day. And those choices, made day after day, gradually shape our character.
When everything around us is constantly changing, character becomes the anchor that keeps us from losing ourselves. And when a person is able to live consistently with the values they believe in, they gain not only the trust of others, but also a sense of peace and fulfillment from knowing that they have lived true to the person they chose to be.
That feeling of living faithfully as the person we have chosen to become is one of the deepest sources of a meaningful life, and of a life truly worth living.
The second question: How will you continue to grow?
An interesting and meaningful life is not a life without mistakes. It is a life in which we continue to learn, to change, and to become better versions of ourselves. It is this process that allows us to retain our curiosity, our hope, and our capacity to adapt in a constantly changing world.
The psychologist Carl Rogers once wrote: “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” Perhaps what he meant was that we do not have to wait for some perfect day before we can say that we are living a meaningful life. It is the continuing process of learning, growing, and becoming throughout the journey itself that gives life its value.
Perhaps the most valuable quality in a student is not how much you know when you leave university, but how long you retain the desire to keep learning after you graduate.
In a world that changes every day, knowledge will eventually become outdated. Technology will continue to advance. Careers may change. But the ability to learn, adapt, and continue growing will always enable you to move forward, however the future may unfold.
This also means that you should not be afraid of being imperfect. Do not be afraid to begin again. Do not be afraid to learn something entirely new. What should concern us most is not that we make mistakes, but that we stop growing because we believe we already know enough.
Every day that we learn something new, reconsider an old assumption, move beyond one of our own limitations, or become a better version of ourselves is another day in which meaning is added to our lives. A meaningful life is not one that is complete, but one that is continually growing.
The third question: How will you use your life and your abilities to create something of value for others and for society?
Ultimately, a life is measured not only by what we achieve for ourselves, but also by what we bring to others. It does not have to be something grand. It may simply be a patient who is healed; a student who is inspired; a product that makes life easier; a family made happier; or a community made better because we were there.
Many psychologists have suggested that meaning is not found when we focus only on ourselves, but when we direct ourselves toward something or someone beyond ourselves. Perhaps that is why the moments in which life feels most meaningful are often not the moments when we receive a title or achieve some personal success, but those in which we know that something we have done has made another person’s life even a little better.
Each of us will create value in a different way. Some will heal patients. Some will design sustainable buildings. Some will create new knowledge. Some will quietly educate a generation of students. Others will care for and nurture their families. What matters is not the scale of our contribution, but that each of us finds a way to use our abilities to create a positive impact on other people and on the community around us.
This is also where character and growth come together. When character becomes our foundation, and growth becomes a lifelong journey, then the value we create becomes a natural expression of the life we have chosen to live. And perhaps the most meaningful life, the life most worth living, is one in which, when we look back, we can say that our presence made the world around us a little better.
Dear Graduates,
These three questions are certainly not the whole answer to what makes a life meaningful and worth living. But perhaps the practice of continuing to ask ourselves questions such as these and reflecting deeply upon them is precisely what will help each of us gradually discover our own answer.
I believe that the three ideas I have shared with you today: shaping your character, continuing to grow, and using your abilities to create positive value, will always be important foundations for living a life filled with energy and finding genuine meaning in what you do every day.
And throughout the journey ahead, I hope the core values of a Van Lang person: Morality - Will - Creativity will always remain with you. May these values serve as an anchor as you continue searching for your own understanding of a meaningful life, and as you choose how you will live, how you will work, and how you will contribute to society in the years ahead.
Dear Parents,
The achievements we celebrate today would not have been possible without your boundless love and the support of your families and loved ones. On behalf of the University, I extend my sincere gratitude to all parents for accompanying the University throughout this journey and for giving our students the support and confidence they needed to complete their studies.
My heartfelt thanks also go to our faculty members and staff across the University for your dedication in teaching, guiding, and supporting our students throughout their academic journey.
I would also like to thank the Organizing Committee, our faculty and staff, our student volunteers, and all those working quietly behind the scenes, whose care, attention to detail, and dedication have made today’s ceremony both dignified and warm.
I wish our distinguished guests, parents, faculty members, staff, and students good health, success in your work, and happiness in your lives.

Commencement Ceremony - Morning, 06/08/2026 Dear Master’s Graduates in Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, and Construction Engineering, You graduate at a time when postgraduate education at Van Lang has made significant progress. One notable feature of this graduating cohort is the high proportion of students with publications. In particular, the Natural Resources and Environmental Management program has recorded especially impressive publication outcomes. Your theses have demonstrated a strong applied orientation, addressing real-world challenges faced by local communities, businesses, and society. These programs have also attracted international students, some of whom are graduating today. This is also the first graduating cohort of the Master’s program in Construction Engineering, marking an important milestone in our contribution to developing highly qualified professionals for the field of construction and sustainable infrastructure development. Congratulations to you all! Dear Bachelor’s and Engineering Graduates in Technology and Engineering, In technology and engineering, competence is demonstrated not only through disciplinary knowledge but also through the ability to apply that knowledge to identify and solve real-world problems. Through projects, capstone assignments, internships, laboratory work, and workshop practice, you have gradually developed the ability to analyze problems, test solutions, and take responsibility for the products and outcomes you create. It is particularly encouraging to see the strong spirit of research and innovation among our students, reflected in a number of outstanding achievements. One example is a project by students from the Faculty of Environment to develop an anthocyanin-integrated biofilm for monitoring food freshness, which won First Prize at Van Lang University’s 2023–2024 Scientific Research and Technology Transfer Conference. Biotechnology students won Second Prize at the Euréka Student Scientific Research Awards, while the Faculty of Construction team won First Prize in the X-Structure category at the IDEA-X 2026 Construction Innovation Competition. Many students have also contributed to international publications, including a student from the Faculty of Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Engineering with a paper published in a Q1 journal, and a student from the Faculty of Information Technology who was first author of a paper published in IEEE Access. Your projects have also addressed urgent practical challenges, including greenhouse-gas emissions inventories, wastewater reuse, AI applications for early detection of rice diseases, and the development of low-cost rapid diagnostic solutions. These experiences provide a foundation from which you can continue to use knowledge and technology to create positive value for the community. Congratulations to you all!  |
Commencement Ceremony - Afternoon, 06/08/2026 Dear Master’s Graduates in English Language, and Bachelor’s Graduates in Languages, Social Sciences, and Humanities, Throughout your studies, you have acquired specialized knowledge while also having many opportunities to broaden your understanding of language, culture, people, and society through practical experience. Students in English Language, Chinese Language, and Korean Language and Culture have participated in study and exchange programs in the United States at CityU, in China at Central South University, and in Taiwan at National Taitung University. You have engaged with international students and undertaken placements and internships in businesses where you were able to apply your language skills in specific professional contexts. Commencement Ceremony - 07/08/2026 Dear Master’s and Bachelor’s Graduates in Architecture, During your time at Van Lang, you have gradually developed your design thinking, research capabilities, and ability to address real-world challenges related to living space. Many students have made their mark in professional competitions such as the INSEE Prize, LIXIL Talent Match, Green Summer Design Studio, Vietnam-Korea Architecture programs, and the National Architecture Student Festival. You have also actively participated in research, published papers in conference proceedings, and undertaken projects exploring the integration of indigenous elements into design. That same spirit is reflected in this year’s graduation projects, which propose solutions related to housing, infrastructure, planning, and sustainable urban development. Dear Bachelor’s Graduates in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Today’s graduating cohort has made a strong impression through scientific research and professional competitions, with many projects receiving University-level awards. Most notably, this is the first cohort whose students have been awarded the international FIATA professional certification. This milestone reflects the University’s commitment to aligning academic programs with international professional standards, while recognizing your growth in knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities in response to the increasingly demanding requirements of logistics and supply chain management. Dear Bachelor’s Graduates in Industrial Design, Digital Art and Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design and Graphic Design Your projects and achievements demonstrate your growth in creative thinking, technological competence, and ability to transform ideas into professional practice. During your studies, Digital Art and Design students completed numerous game, animation, music video, and visual storytelling projects following professional studio production processes. Fashion Design students took an active role in organizing and operating their own graduation shows and participated in programs and competitions such as the Pierre Cardin Fashion Show and Real Leather. Industrial Design students drew upon cultural and heritage materials to develop board games, smart toys, jewelry, and a wide range of contemporary, highly applicable products. Although you work through different languages of design, you have all demonstrated technological mastery, professional thinking, and a commitment to carrying cultural values forward through creativity. The work you have produced and the achievements you have attained throughout your studies demonstrate your ability to combine creative thinking with professional practice and social responsibility. You have gradually brought ideas beyond drawings and studio spaces into products and environments that can function, be exhibited, and become part of everyday life. Graphic Design students have expanded their practice beyond 2D design into UI/UX, Motion Graphics, and multimedia communication, while engaging with cultural, environmental, and social issues through their projects. You have earned notable achievements, including First Prize in the EXOTIC Graphic Design Competition and awards at the ISMA 2025 International Film Festival and the BLUE AWARD 2025 International Graphic Design Competition. Alongside the curriculum, the University has continued to invest in practice facilities and strengthen connections with businesses and professional exhibitions. A new workshop of twice the size of the previous facility has given students greater opportunities to bring ideas to life and develop professional skills. Interior Design projects such as a memorial space for the COVID-19 pandemic and the “Villa Sắc Chăm – Mỹ Nghiệp Collection” show that you have considered not only function and aesthetics, but also the relationship between design, collective memory, and heritage values. Commencement Ceremony - 08/08/2026 Dear Master’s Graduates in Public Relations, and Bachelor’s Graduates in Film and Television Technology, Communication Technology, Public Relations, and Multimedia Communications, Public relations, communications, film, and television are fields of constant innovation. They require creativity, the ability to apply technology, a deep understanding of audiences, and sensitivity to social change. During your studies at Van Lang, you developed these capabilities through real-world events, multimedia projects, audiovisual productions, and collaboration with businesses. From developing ideas and managing production to communicating stories and responding to real professional requirements, each experience has helped equip you for the career ahead. Your energy and sense of responsibility have also been evident in your academic activities, scientific research, student initiatives, and community projects. These experiences will provide a strong foundation as you enter your professions with practical competence, adaptability, and an awareness of the social impact of your work as communication professionals. Your academic programs were designed to connect disciplinary knowledge with professional practice. Through event-management courses, multimedia projects, and collaboration with businesses, you have directly developed communication products, responded to real-world requirements, and strengthened your professional capabilities. Cohort 28 has also distinguished yourself through your energy, enthusiasm, and sense of responsibility in academic activities, student initiatives, and community projects. Notably, you have completed numerous university-level research projects, published papers in journals and conference proceedings in Vietnam and abroad, and presented research findings at international conferences including the International Conference on Business, Economics and Management (ICBEM) 2026 in Taiwan, the 2nd International Conference on Green Solutions and Emerging Technologies for Sustainability (GSETS) 2024, and the Asian Seminar on Network for Combating Fake News (ASNC) 2024. These achievements demonstrate that, alongside your practical professional capabilities, you have also begun to develop a research mindset and the ability to engage with emerging issues in communications. Commencement Ceremony - 09/08/2026 Dear Master’s Graduates in Commercial Business and Banking and Finance, You have completed programs designed to connect education with research and academic knowledge with professional practice. Through your studies, you have developed advanced disciplinary knowledge as well as analytical, decision-making, and adaptive capabilities for a global environment. It is particularly encouraging that many students have publications during their studies, with graduates in Commercial Business and Banking and Finance making a meaningful contribution to these collective research outcomes. The research foundation and professional experience you have gained through your programs will help you continue to make well-grounded decisions, adapt to change, and contribute meaningfully to the fields you pursue. Congratulations to you all! Dear Bachelor’s Graduates in Marketing, Cohort 28 is one of the largest cohorts in the Faculty of Commerce. Over your four years at Van Lang, you have grown professionally during a period of profound change in marketing, driven by digital technology, artificial intelligence, and rapidly shifting consumer behavior. With three areas of specialization: Marketing Management, Digital Marketing, and Event Marketing, you have been able to choose learning pathways suited to your strengths and interests.
