Presentation of the course report on “Experiencing International Design Trends” for Course 26’s Students in the Graphic Design Major

On June 30, 2023, the Faculty of Arts and Design of Van Lang University organized a showcase of the course report on “Experiencing International Design Trends”, presenting the students’ results from their tour, experiences, and research on the design trends in South Korea.

The course “Experiencing International Design Trends” is specially designed for the “special” orientation of the Graphic Design major in the Honors Program. It aimed to supplement the specialized knowledge, and provide direct access to and research opportunities on global design trends.

The showcase was attended by MSc. Painter. Phan Quan Dung, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design; Dr. Nguyen Dac Thai, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design; MSc. Doan Duy Thai Lam, Deputy Head of the Honors Program; MSc. Man Thi Hong Thien, lecturer of the course “Experiencing International Design Trends”, and Mr. Kei Nguyen from Tree Studios.

MSc. Painter. Phan Quan Dung, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design, shared, “I am immensely proud of the quality of students in Course 26 of the Graphic Design major in the Honors Program. On their recent trip, they had the opportunity to experience a multicultural environment in South Korea while gaining specialized knowledge in one of the most developed countries in the field of design. This experience will serve as a stepping stone to unlocking the potential and capabilities of the Graphic Design students through practical learning activities and real-world experiences."

During the showcase, six research projects were presented by students, many of which were highly praised for their practicality and cultural connection between Vietnam and South Korea.

  • Topic 1: Visual Communication Design in Korea Museums;
  • Topic 2: Graphic on the walls and how Korean dispose spatial in design;
  • Topic 3: How Korean Solve language barriers;
  • Topic 4: Advertising design trends in Korea;
  • Topic 5: Graphic Design of Packaging at convenience stores;
  • Topic 6: How Korean designers make everything look cute, but you can't be mad about it.

MSc. Man Thi Hong Thien, lecturer of the course “Experiencing International Design Trends”, shared the learning process and real experiences of Van Lang University students in South Korea, “The students had the opportunity to observe and explore prominent design works in South Korea, engage in outdoor activities, and visit famous museums. While many students were still unfamiliar with note-taking and photo-documenting, they eventually successfully completed their presentations. Many demonstrated their keen observation, sharp thinking, and creativity. Through this experience, I acknowledge the passion for learning and exploration of students of Course 26 in the Graphic Design major of the Honors Program.”

Dr. Nguyen Dac Thai, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design, expressed his thoughts: “Through the trip to South Korea, the Graphic Design students have had many new experiences in a country that is highly developed in the field of design. It will serve as a stepping stone for the students to enhance themselves and acquire additional skills and specialized knowledge. It is also an opportunity and preparation for the students to open the doors to their future careers.”

It is hoped that the experiences gained during the trip to South Korea will provide Van Lang University students with additional knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to apply these insights to their studies and future careers.
