On December 25, 2024, Van Lang University held an evaluation committee for two school-level scientific research projects conducted by students from the Faculty of Law at Van Lang University.
A research group consisting of students Nguyen Anh Thy, Nguyen Dinh Ha Giang, Tran Nguyen Thanh Giang, led by Nguyen Anh Thy and supervised by Mr. Le Ho Trung Hieu, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at Van Lang University, successfully completed the research project. "Copyright Protection in the Use of ChatGPT under Vietnamese Law and in Some Other Countries - Recommendations for Improving Vietnamese Law.
The results indicated that since the emergence of the ChatGPT, a significant concern has been copyright for works created by ChatGPT. In fact, in Vietnam, there have been many lawsuits related to this problem. Still, the courts have encountered difficulties in protecting copyrights for this type of product and in determining the owner. While different countries have various views on the protection of this type of work, they generally agree that the protected owner is still a human (programmer, user, etc.). Therefore, Vietnamese law needs to have more specific regulations on this issue in the Intellectual Property Law 2005 (amended in 2019, 2022), especially considering a special and independent status when ChatGPT can fully automatically create works without human intervention in the future.
The second scientific research project “Law on Application of Blockchain in Real Estate in Some Countries – A Lesson for Vietnam”, was conducted by a group of students Nguyen Ngoc Bao Chan, Pham Hoang Ngan, Thai Thi Huyen, Hoang Thi Xuan Anh, Nguyen Ngoc Gia Han, led by Nguyen Ngoc Bao Chan and under the guidance of Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hai and Mr. Le Ho Trung Hieu. The research results are impressive.
According to the group’s research project, Blockchain has been and is being applied in many areas of life and is gradually recognized for its positive values. In many countries, Blockchain is used as a platform for digital transactions, where agreements are encrypted to ensure security, speed, and accuracy. Blockchain is also the basis for building payment methods based on programming languages to promote the speed of business activities. So, the research group has chosen real estate business as the subject to evaluate. Besides the benefits of Blockchain when applied to this activity, the research group has pointed out some issues that countries need to pay attention to in order to build appropriate legal regulations, such as the legality of virtual currency, how to manage Blockchain and smart contracts, and notarization. Through practical cases in some countries, the group provided a comprehensive view of this application to draw lessons for improving Vietnamese law in the real estate business.
The thesis evaluation committee, chaired by Assoc. Prof. PhD. Bui Anh Thuy stated that both research projects have high applicability and are up-to-date, positively contributing to the goal of improving Vietnamese law in the digital transformation period and in the era of national growth. Notably, the research results have been published in reputable scientific journals, presented at national scientific conferences, and awarded prizes.
These promising research projects not only demonstrate the capabilities of Law students at Van Lang University but also affirm the important role of the younger generation in addressing legal issues in the digital transformation era. Many more student research projects from the Faculty of Law will continue to be evaluated at the school level.
