Intellectual Property Training: Copyright, Related Rights, and Registration Procedures at the Copyright Office

On December 15, 2023, the VLG Training and Development Center, in collaboration with the VLU Department of Research Development, launched a training series on "Intellectual Property Knowledge." After three classes, the fourth class titled "Copyright, Related Rights, and Registration Procedures at the Copyright Office," was held on March 6, 2024, for the staff and lecturers, marking the conclusion of the training series.

To support the staff and lecturers in gaining a deeper understanding of the aspects, procedures, and methods related to copyright and related rights, the training session was led by Ngo Phuong Tra, an expert at the HCMC Copyright Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. With over 24 years of experience, the expert shared important information and knowledge to help the VLU lecturers and staff grasp their rights and responsibilities in intellectual property, guiding filing applications for copyright registration and related rights for works created within the university.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Kim Oanh, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Head of the Department of Research Development, emphasized that this was the new beginning for a multifaceted understanding of intellectual property. She stated, "Van Lang University is committed to supporting our lecturers through concrete activities. This is why the Research Development Department not only encourages but also facilitates the review and registration of outstanding products and works, providing financial support and special support policies for our faculty members to contribute to meaningful activities and products. We hope that after today, our lecturers will have a clear understanding of the various types of products and how we can leverage our rights."

The training program involved 3 main parts, each focusing on an important aspect of intellectual property rights. The first part provided an overview of the law on copyright and related rights. The second part focused on the application of copyright and related rights in the university context. The third part provided detailed instructions on copyright and related rights registration procedures. Expert Ngo Phuong Tra is both a communicator of information and a dedicated guide on copyright and related rights in the field of intellectual property.

Using real-life examples, expert Ngo Phuong Tra explained the 12 types of works covered by copyright, ranging from literature to technology, and from the arts to science. Protecting copyright is a crucial step in building a creative and thriving community.

The content of "Copyright and Related Rights in the Context of Universities" has gained rapt attention from VLU lecturers. The expert delved into the aspects of identifying the subject, determining the owner, and making recommendations for rights management; she also provided strategic recommendations for Van Lang University, suggesting that the university should have specific policies on establishing operational procedures and processes to protect copyright and intellectual property.

The discussion on copyright and related rights fostered an active academic atmosphere, with opinions being exchanged and shared, broadening the lecturers’ knowledge and understanding of intellectual property, and contributing to the development of a strong and creative academic community at Van Lang University.
