On May 15 and May 16, 2025, the Faculty of Architecture, Van Lang University, organized a graduation project defense for students of Class 26 with 168 elaborate and dedicated topics. This project not only affirms the students' professional thinking and personality after many months of research and implementation, but is also an important milestone in assessing the students' comprehensive capacity over 5 years of study.
The defense took place in 4 councils with 168 different project topics, demonstrating the aesthetic thinking and professional implementation capacity of each individual. The highlight of this year's defense season is the trend of topics towards culture and national identity. Most of the projects focused on exploiting heritage values - from traditional architecture, craft villages, to regional cultural elements - with a fresh, modern perspective of the younger generation. The topics showed a delicate harmony between the past and the future, between identity and technology, between old values and new needs of contemporary society.
From the perspective of the professional council, Dr. Architect Do Phu Hung, Chairman of Council 1, Head of the Faculty of Architecture at Van Lang University commented: "In general, the students have completed the project content well, closely following the requirements and practical context of society. Compared to previous years, this year topics have clearly changed, focusing more on social and heritage issues, in parallel with technology and future development trends. This is a positive signal, showing that students are not only creative but also know how to recognize their responsibilities in the context of their upcoming careers."
Not only stopping at “renewing” heritage, students also demonstrate the ability to transform the core values of Vietnamese culture – history – society into architectural design in a creative and convincing way. The works imbued with the breath of Vietnam are recreated through public spaces, cultural centers, museums, theaters, eco-villages,.... but are approached with contemporary, flexible and sustainable design thinking.
Vietnamese history is a strong source of inspiration, mentioned in most of this year's graduation projects. From the perspective of the younger generation, history is no longer just a material to tell the past, but has become a foundation for creativity, connection and criticism of the present. Many students have chosen to approach historical slices through architecture, in order to convey cultural and spiritual values in a vivid and profound way. Among them, the project "Vietnam Tunnel War Remnants Museum" by student To Trong Trung Nam stands out because of the way it both recreates the underground war space and creates a cinematic and emotional architectural experience for visitors.
Along with the flow of history, traditional art and Vietnamese cultural identity are also a great source of inspiration, chosen by many students as the center of their topics. From lacquer paintings, Classical Vietnamese Opera, to ancient writing, folk art elements are not only design materials, but also a way for students to express their personal connection with national culture, thereby creating projects that are both emotional and applicable and oriented towards long-term development. Among them, student Tran Ngoc Nhan with the project "Center for Exhibition and Development of Lacquer Art" was impressed with the way it deeply conveyed the idea of preserving and developing traditional art in contemporary life. The project clearly demonstrates the spirit of connection between the original value of Vietnamese lacquer and modern architectural space, creating a work of intersection - where art is not confined but continues to live, spread and develop.
With the spirit of respecting history but not mechanically repeating the past, the project “Vietnam Industrial History Museum” by student Nguyen Chi Thien is one of the projects that is also highly appreciated by teachers. From the exhibition space to the organization of internal traffic, Chi Thien has demonstrated the ability to flexibly apply the old - industrial material heritage and the new - sustainable, modern architectural solutions, creating a project that is both highly expressive and meets practical functions.
Master of Architect Nguyen Manh The Vinh, Secretary of Council 1, highly appreciated the overall quality of the class: "This year's students have quite even abilities. Except for a few average projects, most of them are good or better, including many topics of very good quality. This reflects the clear growth in the academic capacity and design thinking of students through each class". He also pointed out a point to note about the gap between theory and practice and hoped that students would quickly adapt and develop in the future career environment.
During the defense, topics on public works such as schools, hospitals, treatment centers, resorts for different generations and communities were also highly appreciated by the Council. This shows that besides ideas about cultural heritage, students also pay great attention to more practical works that bring spiritual and physical values to social life.
