On February 27, 2025, the Faculty of Arts and Design at Van Lang University hosted a workshop titled "Handcrafted Leather Art: From Theory to Creative Practice." The event aimed to equip students with fundamental knowledge and skills in applying leather materials to fashion design.
Handcrafted leather art is not only a unique shaping technique but also an endless source of inspiration for fashion designers. From simple details to complex creations, leather adds a luxurious touch and sophisticated highlights to garments.
Mr. Pham Minh Phung – an expert in leather product and footwear design – presented an overview of the handcrafted leather-making process, popular leather types on the market, quality assessment methods, and especially the secrets to distinguishing genuine leather from synthetic leather.
Applying the learned knowledge, participants had the opportunity to create simple leather products such as wallets, charms, and keychains under the guidance of experienced instructors. This hands-on practice helped students gain a deeper understanding of leather materials, refine their craftsmanship skills, and spark creativity for their future graduation projects
Additionally, guest speakers introduced the international leather design competition "Real Leather. Stay Different." This global initiative, sponsored by LHCA, aims to promote the sustainable use of leather. Notably, 2025 marks Vietnam's first participation in this competition. Faculty members from the Fashion Design Department hope that Van Lang University students will contribute outstanding works and receive prestigious awards.
