Faculty of Foreign Languages's Course 29 freshmen of Van Lang University confidently start their university journey

On October 1, 2023, the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Van Lang University organized an orientation day for the Course 29 freshmen, introducing information, sharing study experiences, and awarding scholarships to freshmen.

Dr. Phan The Hung, Head of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, shared: Confidence and a spirit of facing challenges are required to succeed in the university journey and beyond. Besides, language learners should equip themselves with soft skills such as critical thinking, communication , information management, understanding of media and technology, as well as develop behavioral and leadership skills. Also, indicators like IQ (intelligence), EQ (emotional intelligence), and AQ (adaptive intelligence) should be concerned with developing cognitive abilities and apprehending emotions for comprehensive language expression. In terms of a smooth and fulfilling university journey, Dr. Phan The Hung emphatically encouraged students to focus on developing a specific study plan, including goals divided into stages to serve as motivation and strive every day.

Dr. Phan The Hung, Head of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Van Lang University, advised freshmen of the English Language Department and the Chinese Language Department on nine cultural principles making the differences for Van Lang. 

In companion with Course 29 freshman of the English Language Department and Chinese Language Department, Tran Ngoc Khanh An, Course 21 alumna of English Language Department, currently the Operations Manager of Ames English Language Center, shared her knowledge and experiences, inspiring the juniors. Also, Ms. An was thankful due to Van Lang University dedicated lecturers, great friendships, and an excellent learning environment.

Dr. Nguyen Hai Long and Dr. Mai Thu Hoai introduced the English Language Department and the Chinese Language Department of Van Lang University. 

During the orientation day, Dr. Nguyen Hai Long, Head of the English Language Department, and Dr. Mai Thu Hoai, Head of the Chinese Language Department and the Second Foreign Language Department, introduced the curriculum and the expected outcomes for each major. Accordingly, English Language and Chinese Language majors are instructed in basic skills like listening, speaking, reading, and writing while also being able to gain deep knowledge about the history development, culture, lifestyle, and habits of native speakers. In their third year, English Language majors can choose one of the five specializations: Business English, English Teaching, English Translation and Interpretation, Business English-Chinese, and English Tourism. On the other hand, Chinese Language majors can choose one of the two specializations: Business Chinese, and Chinese Translation and Interpretation.

Tran Ngoc Khanh An, a Course 29 alumna of the English Language Department, currently an Operations Manager of Ames English Language Center, came to share and inspire the juniors. 

For students who choose to study the Honors Program in English Language, Ms. Cao Thi Xuan Tu, Lecturer in charge of the Honors Program of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, mentioned that students will enhance high-quality English language standards, communication skills training, problem-solving abilities, and English research with a preference for English proficiency certification at IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Significantly, students have opportunities to participate in the Summer Camp, exchange with international students, and accumulate study and work experience in an international standard environment.

Entering a new learning environment, the freshman of Course 29 of the Faculty of Foreign Languages may get overwhelmed by new concepts, learning methods, and entirely new living environments. Hence, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Van, the Student Affairs Assistant of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, shared essential information about administrative procedures, university regulations, and rules in order to help students feel more confident and at ease studying at Van Lang University.

Ames Center awarded four scholarships to freshmen of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, who have excellent entrance achievements.

Choosing a university is choosing a journey. Starting a new journey with activities, conversations with lecturers as well as interactions with alumni helps make the upcoming study process for the Course 29 freshmen of Van Lang University. Wishing Course 29 freshmen a strong and successful academic journey, inheriting the traditional criteria of "Morality - Will - Creativity" from the former generations.
